One Minute Club Video

I get many emails from teachers asking about the one minute club. So I decided to put together a very short (one minute-what a coincidence!) video that shows different ages of students in action. This is my first video and I didn’t know what I was doing, so please be gentle! The video is posted on Vimeo. You will have to click on the link below the picture to see the video. Vimeo is like YouTube, but not commercial.

The students in this video are saying and playing the notes, but the microphone didn’t pick it all up. The times each student was able to say and play the cards ranged from 24 seconds to just a little over a minute. I keep the cards in the same order each semester so that it is fair.

    I’m a 73 (next week) year old whose first instrument is Mandolin, which I learned as a very young girl, then went on to violin, and recently taught myself ukulele (while recuperating from a double knee replacement) now I’ve decided to learn piano, after all this time.   3. I think the one minute club is a great idea to make note reading fun and an on going target in teaching. many thanks for the idea and inspiration Susan. I’ve been using it for a while now but have adapted it for my students by breaking down the notes into 4 learning levels which culminate in the one minute club. each level has to be completed in one minute so beginners can have a sense of achievement naming just middle c position notes in one minute ( and recieving a certificate) but then add a few more ( appropriate to their learning) to achieve level 2 but still in one minute, and so on, until eventually they can do all notes in one minute to be in the club!

      Kath, great suggestions. I work up slowly, also. Most younger children do not have the skills to perform the task in one minute!

  4. Fabulous! I just went out and bought colored cardstock so I can print your flashcards and we’re going to start this next week. Thanks for the video, that really helped! One last question, do you mix the treble and bass together for all of your students, or just the older ones?

      Good question Valerie! I mix the bass and treble clefs randomly. I only do it with the younger students after several years of preparation. The second grader in the video has been taking piano for 3 years and he’s a very intelligent visual learner with good eye-hand control. If they can’t be successful and it’s not fun, I don’t do it!
