I can relate with your post above about how important it is to reinforce concepts. This worksheet will certainly help with that.     Susan, you’re so right, that we have to say things a lot! But there’s more – the STUDENT has to say it a lot! The last few years I’ve gotten big into having students make vocabulary flash cards that they’re supposed to study. Of course, some students are better about it than others. About twice a year, I have a TEST WEEK which I advertise to the parents and ask them to study with their child. Overall, the studio is doing much better, now.

    These ideas are brilliant! We have been using your note recognition games for a long time, particularly ‘notes in the fast lane’ but today I gave the ‘Valentine Composing Activity’ to my girls who are working at grade 4 and grade 2 and they loved it. Amazing how ambitious you can be from this simple idea and I will definitely be doing more of this. I hope you’ll be posting similar ‘on the staff’ composing ideas at other times of the year.

      Becky, thanks for asking about the puzzle! Here are the rules.

      There are 4 squares in each row across and each column down. Each of the squares in the rows going across and down are to be filled in to contain 4 different rhythm notes: whole, half, quarter, and eighth.

      Each rhythm can only appear once in a row or column. For example, in the first square on the top left row, you cannot put a quarter note, because there is already a quarter note in the first column going down. You will have to put an eighth note. In the other empty square on the top row, you put a quarter note.

      Continue that way, filling in the empty squares so that no row or column has two of the same rhythm notes.

      If you are still confused, so a Google search on it. It is really made for numbers. I just modified the puzzle for rhythm symbols.

      Angela, it’s really easy! There are four boxes across and four down. In the top row of 4 boxes there is a whole note and a half note. So the two missing notes are an eighth note and a quarter note. In the first row down, there is a quarter note and a half note, so a whole note and an eighth note are missing. You have to play around with it a little bit so that the note you put in the row going across is not already in the row going down. Hope that makes sense!

    I’ve used these before. They’re fun! Any chance you could make them to fit a label #8160. These also have 30 labels on a page but the keyboard is not quite centered on each label. The ones at the top and bottom of the page are quite close to the edge of the label and nearly running off.

      Deb, according to Avery, these lables are the same size as #8160. I put one template on top of the other and they are exactly the same size, so it really won’t help you if I make another template. Be sure to check your settings. Were you sure you used ACTUAL SIZE as the setting in the dialog box that opened?

      Brenda, that is a very good question!

      I will be doing a certificate, but I don’t think I’ll do the junior cards. I’ve decided it gets to be a bit much, so I might just give different ages different skills but use the same cards. My older students are doing ledger lines, and my younger students will do half the cards. I hope that helps with your plans.

    Susan, your wonderful worksheets have breathed life back into my 25 years of teaching piano lessons! For the last few years I have had a big classroom in my church with 6 round tables and put activities of different levels on 3 of them ( I leave 2 tables for parents/siblings to sit and do homework. I have folded name cards for each student. When students come in, they find their name and work on the activity there. If they finish, they can look around and find something else they enjoy. I have games that I will play with them at a table or at the piano(they love that). I try to look at what each student has worked on before or after their lesson. I am using your “Snowmen and Reindeer” activities during January. Over Christmas, I found a large cardboard header of a drawing of a reindeer in the forest and snowmen on the corners. It was on a display for giftcards and I was able to snag it as they were about to throw it away ! I used it on my table with the S and R ‘games’ and the kids loved it ! I will be looking for your donate page. Thank you !

What is your flat fee for books and materials, if you would share? This is when I do mine and everything is due back by May 1st (though I think this year I’m going to have it due back by April 15th instead). At the same time, they also choose their summer camp sessions. Parents LOVE having all this information early! πŸ™‚

    One of my parents who forgets the monthly check suggested Venmo so I downloaded it and signed up. It works great and now another parent is also using it. It’s easy and quick and saves the trip to the bank.

  51. Very nice….I’ve the overlapping lessons a lot this past semester. It also gives students a chance to make up for lost time if parents are late and helps if students are close to the same level. Haven’t tried the April deposit yet. I may do it in beginning of May as the kids are finishing up their recital pieces. About paypal…I have heard about Venmo….no fee. My sister in law started telling me about it over Christmas. I started looking at it over winter break. Couldn’t hurt to check it out too. Thanks for sharing!

    I have three siblings who are different in just about every way! But they had such a blast with this and it was quite touching to see them working together. I have their three lessons back to back, so I took a little time off the end of each and then they pretty much sight-read it together to meet the 12 minute deadline for them. Loved that they could feel successful with this, even at their varying levels of skill, in such a short, focused period. Made a nice counterpoint to the weeks of prepping the same three or four pieces each for our January recital. Genius idea- thank you Susan!

    This is a favorite piece with my piano students. It is a piece that inspires those on the edge to work a little harder and practice a little more. The fingering is practical and kids are able to follow the patterns. It is just the right mix of technique and sound to create a song that they love to play, perform and they are so proud of their accomplishment. It is difficult to find music for this level that meets those requirements. I am a HUGE fan of Susan’s site and her music. THANK YOU SUSAN!!!!!

  96. I like how you pointed out that it’s easy to find the root when you find the 4th. I love the song they sing in my son’s Let’s Play Music class (also on the demo video) that says “the note above the gap’s the root it just has rearranged.” Even younger children can understand this concept.     I ordered a set of all 6 theory books by Mona Rejino. I really like them and am using them with several students so far and am planning to get more students into them next year. Here is my review.

    The books are attractively laid out with easy to follow directions. Informational text is highlighted with pastel boxes of a different color for each level. Each level includes ear training and sight reading exercises, puzzles, score analysis, and a written review test at the end. A teacher answer key for each level is available online.

    Level 1 covers:
    -keyboard geography, basic note and rest values, finger numbers
    -stem direction, note movement, the staff, lines and spaces
    -time signatures, dynamics
    -guide notes, step and skip, five-finger patterns

    Level 2 covers:
    -review of Level 1 concepts

  136. Triple cone chord matchup or sorting game could be fun. Use triple decker chocolate and vanilla ice cream cones to represent the different black and white key patterns on the piano for chords. For example CF and G are all vanilla but B has vanilla on the bottom with two chocolate scoops. Maybe cutting the worksheet and adapting it to more of a game students could race minute to win it style to match all the ice cream chords with their correct cone key or play a memory matching game.

            Well, I don’t have the Snell books, so I can’t help you out with that. The review was written some years ago, and I have given all the books to students so I don’t have copies to look at. I can tell you that they are specifically made to be more advanced than method books and they are very good to prepare students for tests such as the Texas Theory Test. Level 1 will will teach all the notes on the grand staff, and is probably equal to about level 2 in a method book. I’m so sorry if I can’t remember specific details in the books, but it is very hard to remember specifics after so long a time. And this is not my full time job. You might be able to go to the Hal Leonard web site and see some pages from the books!

    I’m not really understanding how you used the materials for our download for the game. How did you the line and space page? What was the page divided into two columns for?

      Julia, the students are given a timed test on notes, either space notes or line notes. I used my phone as a stop watch to time them. To keep score, I wrote the times down on the page that has two columns. The second week the students switched from either space to lines or lines to spaces, depending on what they had been tested on the first week. The students were in teams, so I added up the scores to see which team won. It’s very simple, nothing complicated. It is just a way to make a timed test more fun. Read though the blog post again and see if it makes sense now.

But my students liked it because it was kind of a mystery to them when I asked if they wanted to be a line or a space. They didn’t know what I was up to.       Emily, you have to use an app that allows annotation on PDF files. There are many available. I’ve written a tutorial on Meta Moji (also called Note Anytime) and Notability is a very good one.

    Saturday Solos would make a perfect supplementary book for the beginning student. The solos are delightful, playful and simply refreshing. Because the pieces are pattern based with lots of stepping and skipping, it is a wonderful book for those students that need practice moving in different positions. In addition all the pieces lend itself well for students to learn and practice transposing.

    I used the Jingle Bells Trio with three 5th grade boys. They played it in our Clavinova Festival and our school piano recital. It was a big hit.     I remember once watching a video of a performance of a piece for one piano, six hands, and thought something like this would be great for some of the families that I teach. I was pleased to learn of this arrangement. The second grader was very excited about it and was able to get her 6th grade brother and mom to join in. The 6th grader just started playing tuba and once he realized that the bass line was like a tuba part, he also became enthusiastic. Mom felt a little self-conscious about playing the middle part, but all three of them worked together and they sound great! I look forward to having one of my other families learn Jingle Bells for Three next Christmas!

    Just gave this to a couple of my students yesterday! One is still in early elementary level and his sister is late elementary. BUT…I think these songs will get them practicing for a little bit. She played all 10 songs during a part of her lesson. He made it through most, but has to work because of the moving hand positions. (That’s great!!)

      Melissa, thanks for your comment. Sometimes I underestimate how much harder it is when the hand positions change, even though I try so hard to give the different positions so they don’t get locked into one! I think it is just how some students think.

I’ve got some ideas noodling around in my brain, but how did you have the students prepare it as a gift? Did you have them mount it on anything, or make a card out of it? Just curious

      I had my students play it for their Dad as their gift. But I have some of those big envelopes that are the size of a folded sheet, so thanks for the card idea! Or, they could be laminated. One year we rolled them like a scroll and tied with a ribbon. I don’t recommend that because they wouldn’t stay open for the students to play!

      No, I’m sorry to say Adobe Reader has no way to do that! Can’t change the size and can’t change the font. However, you can use your own fonts if you print it blank and reinsert it into your computer and do it yourself without using the fields in Adobe Reader.

      Always save the file to your desktop before you try to open it.
      There are several browsers and printers and some don’t work well with PDFs. Please check the FAQ at the top of my website where I list some reasons you can’t open files. One of those should help. If not, you may need to have someone in person help you.

  323. Susan, you can buy colourful patterned card stock from Michael’s. Then there is no need to print and paste onto another colour. But the dominoes will be less thick. I like laminating my stuff, kids tend to have sticky or sweaty fingers. So put the page through a laminating machine or take it to a teacher store for a small fee per page. I bought my home laminator from Walmart.

      KathyG, Henle has a feature in their app that if you double click the pedal you can back to the beginning of a repeat. The AirTurn does not support this feature. (I have an AirTurn myself.) The pedals with this feature include the PageFlip Cicada and Firefly pedals. I am not making any suggestions, but I just wanted to let you know.

        Susan, thanks for the additional info on the page turning. I hadn’t specifically settled on which page turner I would get, it’s just that AirTurn is the brand name I happen to know. If you were going to buy one now, which would you get? i.e. do you know anything else about the other two that would make them preferable? I am going to be at the MTNA conference in San Antonio and I know that often vendors have special show deals — I was hoping to pick something up at a bit of a discount while there.

          Kathy, I don’t know if I would get a pedal page turner in order to use just one feature from one app that I would have to buy a lot of scores for, anyway! I would probably get the one with the most features for the money and I know you can get good deals at MTNA. Repeats don’t seem to be that important to me. Remember the double tap to go back to repeats only works in the Henle app and you have to buy all their music. I like my AirTurn!

    I used the 6/8 rhythm cards today and my one student noticed an 8th rest on one of the cards. I think it should’ve been blank (no rest) so that the answer he was looking for ended up being an 8th note.

      You’re right. I should have left off the 8th rest. My bad. Maybe you can ask the students to find Susan’s mistake. But I’ll make new cards as soon as possible.

      Mobile Note is not one that I’ve ever used. But usually if you select the drawing tool and hold down your finger on it, a box with the colors and size of the lines (you want to draw or write) will pop up. If that doesn’t help, you can usually contact the app developer.

    Thanks Susan for the 2016 Minute Club! I just tried it for the first time this week – it’s a great challenge to follow up with after the Spring Theory Tests. I’m seeing great results and enthusiasm!

      I started this week too. I don’t give many rewards in my studio, but I do give $20.00 to the over-all fastest student. And once they win that, they never do it again. So if they keep taking piano, eventually everyone gets to be the winner. Usually my fastest times are around 20 – 24 seconds, and the winner often wins by a tenth of a second! Since I also do the jr club for those kids who need extra help, no one really dreads it. After all these years it is a real tradition in my studio.

    We love Sunny Solos, as first repertoire for very early note readers, and fun sight reading practice for those with a bit more experience. Some of the pieces are also ideal for pre-readers to learn by ear or rote. Imagine their delight when they are later able to decipher the notation and recognise the tune! The pieces are short and appealing with simple illustrations, and the teacher duet parts bring them to life and enrich them without too much distraction. I’ve had several pupils buy the whole book: now that it comes with a studio licence I’ll be using some favourite tunes with even more children. One child loved ‘Wild Horses’ so much that we had to play it to finish off almost every lesson, after deciding on various tempos and dynamics for variety! Another child remembers and loves ‘I can see the stars’ more than three years after learning it. Many of my pupils have taken to ‘Happy times are here’ with gusto, and some have made up their own verses for sad times and other emotions. I have given it only 4 stars not 5, simply because a few of the topics and words are not relevant to children in the UK. But most are!

      For those students who struggle, try the jr cards and use just half the deck. Once they are successful, the next year they may go for the entire staff!

    What IPad games do you like to supplement with? I have done your one minute club in the past and my students and I loved it, but this year I have all beginners. How is your Jr. Club different?

      Valerie, the jr. club is really whatever you want it to be. For young students, you can do just the cards around middle C. For older beginners, it really depends on their age. I’ve found that most middle and high school students can do the entire staff their first year. They have to work on it, of course. For younger beginners, I limit it to the cards I think they should learn. I might give them half of the cards, but use different cards each week. I always say there is no right or wrong. You can make it any way you wish! Just use the cards however it works with your students and keep it fun!

      I made these cards for younger students who can’t learn all the cards. I limit it to the cards I think they should learn. So if they are first grade and started lessons in the fall, I might use only the 10 notes around middle C. Or, if they are older and I want them to work on all the cards, I might give them half of the cards, but use different cards each week. Actually, I change it around each year, because there is no right or wrong way. It is what you want it to be!! By the way, you have such a pretty name!

      Hi Kelly!
      I use something similar about twice a month (sometimes less when we are busy in the studio). Susan has created a series of 12 worksheets called “Notes in the Fast Lane”…so instead of showing notes one at a time on flashcards…I plop the sheet (laminated) on the music rack and use a pointer (a cute one with a hand pointing an index finger) on each note. As I point to the note, kids “say and play” the note on the keyboard just as the video above shows. If I wiggle the pointer….it means the student either said the wrong note name or has the incorrect location on the keyboard. When they answer correctly, the pointer moves to the next note and so on. I use a timer that counts down as they try to race to the end of the page. If they don’t quite make it…we record where they left off…and the next time we pull it out they try to beat their own score. No pressure! If they do make it to the end…they receive an instant prize out of my prize box (10Β’ items) so there is a definite incentive to know their notes! I, too, find that it helps with sight reading and understanding the relationship between notes on a staff and the keyboard. For more advanced students…I also have a 30 second club….and a few students that can do the whole page in under 15 seconds! I always have students reminding me if too many weeks go by and we haven’t done our notes!

    I found a new marker to use, Expo Vis-a-Vis Wet Erase. It’s not just for overhead projectors anymore! It says you can use it on Laminated items. I love them, much easier and comes completely clean. If you have your item sealed around the edges, I just put under the faucet and it washes right off, then dry it. So easy!

      Milla, you are so correct about the geography of the keyboard. Sight-reading is a skill that starts at the very beginning of learning notes of the staff. Students need to recognize notes are either steps, skips, or repeats. It is innate to some students, while others struggle. Learning to sight read patterns is important as well as learning scale fingerings and playing in different positions. Practicing sight reading is very helpful, and there are a lot of sight-reading cards out there. I even have some on my website. I’ve discussed many of these topics in my blog over the years. I’ll try to address it some more.

When I make another one, I’ll try to change it up and give it more of a year-round theme. Also, that’s for the comments on the graphics. You probably notice I made them for some previous music and just I just recycled them. It takes me a long time to draw something!

    SUSAN–this is PERFECT! I have a 6 year old child who has broken her right arm. She just started last year and LOVES piano–she was also diagnosed with alopecia so has lost all her hair –she is so spunky she is just out there in your face, most of the time without her wig.     What do you write in the Key line and reminder line? Do you tie it in with the lesson or the scales or arpeggios? Do you write C for the key and then mark the keys on the keyboard?

      Chris, I usually write the name of the scale for that week if I also add finger numbers o the tiny keyboard. I often leave this blank for older students. I use the reminder for anything I want to remember to check or ask them about the next week. It doesn’t have anything to do with the scale.

      Allysia, these are my student’s weekly assignment sheets. I write what they need to practice and the goals for the week. We also check off scales and other technique that they have learned.

      Karla, unfortunately, that is the way my PDF’s are limited. A lot of teachers use a highlighter mark each date. My Photoshop files are editable, but I only post PDF files because most teachers do not have Photoshop or the particular fonts I use.

      I think I got it at Walgreens. I have several, but I like to use the less expensive one with my younger students because they tend to really press hard. Somewhere recently I saw 3 for $10.00 but I can’t remember where it was. Try the big box stores or a dollar store. Be sure it is a stylus for an iPad or iPhone.

    Thank you so much for the new Fun With Frogs worksheets. I don’t have any beginners to use them with at the moment but have filed them away to use when I do. I really appreciate that you are willing to share your wonderful resources with other teachers and think the art work is fantastic. My only problem is that my computer keeps stopping when it downloads the sheets so I have to restart several times to get them, but the time spent is well worth it for such great resources.       Ann, I’m sorry you are having trouble with the download. Several teachers in New Zealand have told me they also have the same kind of trouble. I think it is the speed of your internet connection, so I don’t think putting it in Dropbox will make a difference. I could try, however, when I am not so busy. Will you send me an email in July when I will be finished with my presentations for the summer?

    These are great, but I think all the hands should have fingernails, and on the last sheet the frog could be smiling over his shoulder, holding his hands up. That would maintain the perspective throughout the exercise that a student has when they look at their hands on the piano. Just my humble opinion. I have a lot of dyslexic students and this would blow them out of the water.

I bought a copy of the first two levels and flashcards at the MTNA National Conference last year, and it has sat on my shelf in the ‘study this in depth’ pile ever since. Tsk tsk. Now that summer is almost here, I am looking forward to getting through that pile, and Piano Safari is at the top of the list. Good to know the website has more info. And I seem to remember there are cool new cards available as well: a practice deck and a deck of ‘piece cards’ (an idea I absolutely love, and am thinking of stealing for my current main course — Music Tree).

    This is a fabulous method! I use it exclusively for all beginners (5 – 8 years old). Just finished up our Guild auditions this past weekend, and the Piano Safari students were commended across the board for their beautiful phrasing and lovely hand position. This method sparks creativity, and allows students to really develop a solid technique that translates to ease of playing. Can’t wait for Level 3!

    I have been using this method for almost 2 years now and I love, love, LOVE it! I use it with all my younger students, and have ALL of my students, regardless of age or level go through the sight-reading cards, they are so fabulous. They get to pick from my big prize box when they pass off a level (16 cards, usually takes 1-3 months) so that motivates them to do it. This method may feel like it is slow-moving at first, but it is fast moving by the time they get to the 2nd book and 8th notes don’t scare them. The first book really lays the groundwork and I love how the technique book on Level 2 gets them really familiar with 5-finger scales that transfers over to the Sight-reading cards. I also love the rote songs and the kids get so excited when they walk away from their first lessons with awesome songs to play. Anyway, I can’t say enough good things about it. I love it!!!!

      Stephanie, I would do a general music program with them. If they are like the average 3 year old, they will struggle trying to play the keys! But there are many things you can teach them. I would get a book on early childhood music education and engage them with age appropriate musical activities, with a focus on the piano! I’m sorry I don’t have names of books I can give you, but maybe go to the library or do an internet search. Music education teachers spend several years learning how to teach young children general music, so it is too involved for me to try to help you here.I wish you the best of luck! With your desire to learn, I know you will do great!

      I’ve taught a three-year-old with the Wunderkeys program which you can find on Amazon. I highly recommend looking up the website first. Andrea and Trevor Dow, the creators of the program, are amazingly helpful and will guide you through. They always answer any questions I have! The Wunderkeys program teaches basic music skills such as high/low sounds, fast/slow, individual finger motions, etc. in a very fun and easy program! Kids really love it, and never lose interest with the 5 different activities in each lesson. Check it out, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed! Have fun!!!

    I recently received all of my mother in laws old music when she passed away, so much fun to go through. She was a singer besides a pianist so she even had some old barber shop quartet stuff for women. That was fun. Hope to use it someday my self.

    I love this! I have an old method book called “The Rhyme Road to Music Land” that I found at a used music sale. It was published in 1911 and all the instruction in the book is written in rhyming verse. I can’t imagine actually teaching with this, but it has some good points, and some of the rhymes are just very funny. A couple of examples…

    “When notes are found upon a line,
    Like beads upon a thread,
    That is: when line goes thru them
    They’re ‘On a line,’ ’tis said.”

    “From Middle C two octaves go,
    Just seven notes up or seven below;
    And two more C’s you’ll surely find,
    Unless to spaces you are blind.”

    I love this post, and the fact that the music was in different 5-finger patterns and keys! Hard to find these days!
    As for myself, I was lovingly reunited with my “Teaching Little Fingers to Play” a couple of years ago after 50 years of separation! A cousin in Colorado discovered it in her stash and kindly sent it to me, thus allowing me to use it with my own grandchildren. They are just puzzled by all of the “stickers”…….!

      I loved Teaching Little Fingers to Play, because the music was so appealing. It’s a lot of fun to re-visit those books! The only problem with that series is that there are so many finger numbers. A lot of teachers white them out. It also progresses very quickly, but the many of us from that generation loved the music, no doubt!

      When I read Mary’s post it reminded me that my first book in 1964 was also “Off We Go” which I still have but I lost track of “Scenes at a Farm”. I have just looked it up and found it is still available. I remember playing the duets at the back of this book. I wonder if our pupils will remember their first (or favourite) book 50 years later (maybe it will be a Susan Paradis one), but just hope that some of them will still be enjoying playing the piano.

      • Walter Carroll was a master at composing for children ( composed “Scenes at a Farm”). I loved playing his “Forest Fantasies” over and over again. Maybe for the next Piano Play-Along I’ll do a retrospective look at Walter Carroll’s fabulous contributions.

  519. OMG! I used this book as child and just LOVED it! I need to dig around for my copy. I recall a cute little “Kitten” piece that I played for a children’s TV show and another piece I played over and over — “Silver Bells?” This book was so motivating and I’m sure it was due to the imaginative B&W artwork, the titles, lyrics, etc. I WISH it was still in print.
