Students learn how to practice slowly and in small chunks.
Description
Stuck in the Tar Pits is a graphic to teach students how to work on a difficult section, how to practice in small chunks, and how playing slowly will make it easier to learn a difficult section. As you know, young students have trouble with spot practicing. They prefer instead to practice by playing the piece over and over and going back to the beginning if they make a mistake, rather than just working on the problem measure.
To play, place a tiny plastic tiger or other small token in the first black space. The student plays the tricky measure. If students make a mistake they are “stuck” until they learn to slow down and play the measure or passage correctly. They must stay in the first black space until they can play it correctly. They move to the second and third space spaces the same way and when they finish the 3rd space they are no longer “stuck” and move off.
