The “What’s that Number?” Game

There is a new game available at Susan Paradis Piano Teaching Resources! This is the “What’s That Number? game. The cows are trying to make it back to the barn before the aliens beam them up! Students need to identify the strange “alien” number to get their cow to the barn.

ON SALE FOR A LIMITED TIME!

How the game works

The object of the game is to determine the value the card represents and that decides how many spaces the player can move. Depending on a few factors, the player may end up moving forward OR backwards! Moving backwards could be a good thing if that means the Alien beams the player up! This game is fun because of it’s unpredictable nature and my family has had a blast testing it (and bonus: My son now knows his Roman Numerals!)

“What’s That Number?” is useful to teachers because it’s basically 3-games-in-one depending on which provided deck of cards you decide to use!

The decks test these skillsets:

  • Roman Numerals – Your students will learn the value of the Roman Numerals which is a handy skill in chord identification
  • Intervals – Have your students learn to QUICKLY identify the size of an interval aiding in faster sight reading.
  • Rhythm Symbols – Help your younger students memorize the number of beats basic theory symbols represent.

I love including the various decks so that you can use it with more students. And your students WILL want to play it again and again because this game really is fun! Honestly, this is a flexible gameboard, meaning I could see possibly doing some expansion decks in the future. Let me know if that’s something you’d be interested in!

What does it include?

This digital download includes:

  • 1 gameboard page
  • 9 pages of cards (3 decks of 3 pages each)
  • Instructions
  • Printable game tokens
  • Color card backs
  • Rule Quick Reference cards to keep with your decks so you can easily remember how to to play!

Simply Purchase > Download > and Print. You will need scissors (or a paper cutter) to cut out the cards. If you choose to use the optional game tokens, you will need small 3/4 inch (~2 cm) binder clips.

Game Tokens

I am in LOVE with the printable game tokens included with this game. They feature the cute cow image so your students can really pretend they are a cow on the run! The way they work is you print out a strip of paper with mirrored cow images on it, fold it, clip it with a binder clip, and remove the binder clip arms. Sound complicated? Don’t worry! I drew this graphic for you:

These cows come in multiple colors so your students will have plenty of options to choose from and you will be able to play with many students at once. 6 colors are included.

What if you don’t have binder clips? No worries! You can use any small trinket around your house as game tokens. Some ideas include: Pencil erasers, Coins, Milk or bottle caps… your options are endless!

However, if you do choose to use the provided game token with the binder clips, I was able to pick up multi-color binder clips off of Amazon in just the right size. You can find those HERE. (As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.) The multi-color binder clip option was fun to coordinate with the cow color!

Boy Approved

My son is really into aliens right now and I think this is a perfect game for September — kind of spooky, but not full blown Halloween themed. We both think the cows are pretty funny, too! If you ARE interested in Halloween and Autumn themed games, worksheets, music — I have TONS on the site. (And a few new ones are in development now!)
