My Little Recital Book

The latest product in the store is this cute “1 sheet = 8 page mini booklet” designed to help students learn what to do at a piano recital. Each page is illustrated with one-of-a-kind art by myself. (One of the kids in the booklet is inspired by my own son, can you guess which picture?)

I remember my mother would have group lessons about a week before the recital so that students of similar ages could get together and practice performing for each other. Part of what eased everyone’s nerves was having a specific routine to practice. Not only did this help students have a clear idea of what to expect, it made for a more “professional” looking recital.

The routine went like this:

  • Walk up to the piano
  • Turn around and face the crowd (with a smile!)
  • Adjust the bench
  • Sit on the bench with your hands in your lap
  • Silently sing the song in your head (to ensure that you don’t play the song too fast because you are nervous!)
  • Gently lift the hands by the wrist to create a fluid motion to the keys.
  • Playing your song (Don’t start over if you make a mistake!)
  • Lift and roll your hands back into your lap.
  • Stand up and face the crowd again and bow or curtsey. (This was always my favorite part!)

That’s a lot to remember, especially for a young student. So I illustrated this simple picture booklet to help give visuals to the steps!

Susan wrote the words for this booklet back in 2019, but the project got shelved since it was such an illustration heavy topic. I’m so happy to pick up where she left off and make this available to you. My mom always did such a great job communicating with children, and I think y’all will appreciate the simple wording. In fact, today my 6 year old son actually picked it up and read it to me!

I LOVE this 1 sheet = 8 page mini booklet format and I’m trying to think of some other ways to use it. It’s so easy for teachers to use since you only need to print ONE page and it’s all one-sided!

Nervous about the folding? No problem! Not only does this printable come with written instructions, I made this useful video that walks you through each step: Folding Instructions Video

For the FIRST week in the store, the My Little Recital Book printable will be discounted 20%. I hope everyone finds this to be a helpful tool for your upcoming Spring recitals. Click the link below to find it in the store.

I love this little book! The illustrations are adorable. To answer your question, my guess is ‘Super Dude’. I thought I had folded the book correctly before watching the video. It turns out I glossed over the part about the dotted line. Oops. Oh well. In the end, I glued the blank side together for more support. It looks great! Thank you.

    1. You’re right! And he loves wearing that hat. He’s even wearing it to school tomorrow for Hat Day.
