Today I am posting a cute music vocabulary crossword puzzle with a fall pumpkin theme. I made it for older students who have learned slightly more advanced music vocabulary words such as tonic and dominant. After testing it, I decided students were more engaged when I included the words in the puzzle at the bottom of the page.
I find the words tonic and dominant particularly hard for students, maybe because they have no reference, and the words are not used directly on their music. I can introduce the words in their method book and two weeks later they will sincerely assure me, “Mrs. Paradis, I have “never heard those words in my life!” At which point I will turn back in their book and show the words circled in several colors and a few stars for good measure, and they will look rather downcast. At least it proves it’s not only oldsters who can’t remember things!
I assure my students it’s ok to forget things, because if they remembered everything I would be out of a job. Plus, it makes me feel younger.
This puzzle might be a fun page for Fall or Halloween group lessons. Or set it out for students to work on while they wait for their lesson to start.
I tried to make it an ink-saver by setting a light opacity on the pumpkin. To save more ink, put it in a page protector and use erasable markers. Then store it in a binder until next year!
