Bats and Cats – a Halloween Game

My students have been enjoying this Halloween rhythm game lately and I thought your students might like it, too. It is fast, and can be played the last 5 minutes of a lesson. The cards span several ability levels, so it is appropriate for  all elementary age students.  It is helpful for students to recognize that a dotted quarter + eighth equals a half note, and I think this game helps that concept. Beginning students enjoy using the first page with the easy rhythms.

The object of Bats and Cats is to match the ‘bat” card with a corresponding note or rest on the game board. This game works with one student and teacher, or it can be modified for a group. It can also be used as a rhythm activity for one student.

Thank you Susan! I found some really cute “bat” erasers that are purple with a black bat. I couldn’t resist using them to cover the squares! My students loved it!
    Thanks again!

That’s a fun idea! I saw some cute ones for a very reasonable price.

  2. Susan, I love your ‘Bats and Cats” and so do the students. I printed each page level on a different color card stock so they are easy to sort. I can mix the first two levels, and separate them if need be.

Once again, beautiful work and such a clever idea. I love your keyboard border design which you also used on your “Fish Certificate” So artfully done.

    Thanks, thanks, thanks!!

I’m glad you like it and thanks so much for telling me. I love the piano border, too, but I had to make it all over again for this game because the other one didn’t fit. Good idea to use different colored card stock, because the sorting problem was something I didn’t think about and it does take time.

      1. I thought of the different coloured cardstock too late. As a remedy, I used 3 different colours of Sharpies to put a small dot on the back according to level.

Thanks again Susan. I shall also play it as tic tac toe ie first one to fill in top line or diagonal line as an alternate way to play.

Now I wish I had made some cards with more dotted notes and 16th notes. My students always need review on that, too.

  4. Beautiful work, Susan. I’ll be incorporating this one into all my group lessons next week. I especially like that it’s multi-level because I teach most of my students in groups (until about gr. 1 or 2).

Beth, that’s what I was thinking. Although I don’t do groups very often, when I do there are usually several levels present.

  5. Thanks so much Susan! This is actually just what I needed- a new seasonal rhythm game!

      Thank you!

This was a big project and I’m so afraid I’ve made a mistake on one of the rhythms. So, if you find a mistake, please let me know!!
